Kirkcudbright care home resident celebrates 100th birthday

A Kirkcudbright care home resident celebrated her 100th birthday on Monday.

Anne Buckley was joined by son Ian and Deputy Lord Lieutenant Mark Jardine, who presented a congratulatory card from the Queen.

The team at Strathdee went the extra mile with balloons, cake and fizzy wine - with some staff who weren’t on duty calling in to pass on their best wishes.

Anne was born in Cowdenbeath in 1921 and grew up in Dunfermline, where her dad was an inspector for Alexander Buses.

In 1943 she married John Buckley, who was from County Cork and stationed at Rosyth as he was in the Royal Navy.

His home port was Chatham in Kent but the couple also had spells in Malta and in France due to John’s postings and enjoyed their trips abroad.

After Ian left home, Anne was looking for something to do so took on a temporary job with the Inland Revenue. It became a permanent position and she worked there for 15 years, retiring at 60.

With Ian already settled in Galloway, they joined him by moving to Kirkcudbright.

They enjoyed life in the town, joining the ramblers and going to the Catholic church with John involved with Kirkcudbright Summer Festivities.

Sadly, he died in 2012 and a few years later Anne moved in to Strathdee. As well as having son Ian, she also has two grand children and four great granddaughters.
