Kirkcaldy Beach locked down after bomb disposal squad remove 'suspicious item'

Police and a bomb disposal unit raced to a Fife beach this afternoon amid reports of a suspicious item.

Officers were alerted to the item, which has now been removed, on Kirkcaldy Beach esplanade at around 12:30pm.

The esplanade was put on lockdown while a bomb disposal team removed the item for "safe disposal".

It's understood a cordon remains in place and police are still in attendance.

Local page, Fife Jammer Locations, shared a photo of the bomb disposal van at the scene earlier today.

A post on the page read: "Bomb squad unit at Kirkcaldy prom, officers down on the beach."

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: "Ar around 12:35pm on Thursday 10 September police were called a report of suspicious item discovered on Kirkcaldy Beach esplanade.

"Officers and EOD are in attendance and the item has been removed for safe disposal."
