Kirkby buses reinstated after week of anti-social behaviour that saw brick thrown at bus

Bus services have been restored to parts of Kirkby after a spate of anti-social behaviour that included someone throwing a brick at a bus.

Ten different routes have been diverted from their usual stops during evenings for the past week in response to concerns about anti-social behaviour in the town.

But after working with Merseyside Police to address the issue, Stagecoach said the routes would be reinstated on Wednesday evening (January 20).

The affected routes are the 14A, 17, 19, 20, 21, 97, 98, 217, 227 and X3, which will all operate as normal from Wednesday.

Community Policing Inspector Dave Morgan, of Merseyside Police, said: “Following recent incidents of criminal damage in the Kirkby area, services into Kirkby were disrupted and from today will resume full routes. This included an incident on Wellfield Avenue at 4pm on Saturday 16 January, in which a brick was thrown at a bus, causing damage to the window.

“The sheer recklessness and stupidity of throwing items at a bus or any vehicle is clear, for those on board and other road users. The passengers and the driver were understandably shaken and could easily have been seriously hurt.

“We are working very closely with Stagecoach and Knowsley Council to ensure the safe running of all services, especially at the current time, where key workers and children still in school need public transport as much as ever. CCTV enquiries are ongoing and we’re meeting regularly to look at solutions.”

Insp Morgan added: “Key to this as ever is information from the community, so I would urge anyone in the community who has information about this or any other similar incidents to come forward. I’d also urge parents and guardians to ensure young people in your care are staying at home at the current time.

“Not only does this anti-social behaviour cause inconvenience and risk to those working hard during this pandemic, any such gathering creates more chance of increasing infections across the borough.”

Stagecoach apologised for the disruption and thanked the police for their assistance.
