Kirkbean celebrations for birthday of founder of American Navy founder

The birthday of one of Scotland’s most famous seafarers will be celebrated at Kirkbean on Saturday.

The event, billed as the John Paul Jones Birthplace Birthday Party, will be held in the museum which bears his name.

A busy tourist attraction these days, the former cottage was the brilliant naval commander’s home until he took to the ocean waves.

All are welcome to attend the 12pm to 4pm party on July 8, which is free.

Attractions on the day include a ceilidh band, a barbecue and refreshments.

Born John Paul on July 6, 1747, the young Galloway man went on to become a naval hero in the American Revolutionary War against the British.

He is generally credited with being the founder of the American Navy, and one of the greatest naval commanders in the history of the United States.

He was also served as a naval commander for Catherine II of Russia.
