Kirk Cousins on his phone call with President Trump: It was ‘very random’

When the Minnesota Vikings defeated the Giants on Sunday to stay in a fourth-place tie with Chicago in the NFC North, the last thing that Kirk Cousins probably expected was a call from the White House.

But that happened on Sunday.

Shortly after the game, Cousins received a message from his agent that President Donald Trump wanted to speak with him. Skeptical at first, Cousins asked if it was a joke. When he was told that the request was for real, Cousins called the number and was immediately connected with Trump’s line.

Cousins described the surprise call on Wednesday to reporters at Vikings practice, via Chris Tomasson:

“I just called him on the bus heading to the airport and I didn’t know. I was just calling the White House and they said, ‘Hold for the president.’ It was just a 30-second call saying congratulations. … Very out of the blue. Very random”

He continued:

“When the president calls, I don’t care who it is, left, right, whatever, down the middle. And if he says call me, I’m going to give him a call and see what he wants.”

Trump is set to hold a campaign rally in Minneapolis on Thursday, but Cousins will not be in attendance.

Cousins golfed with Trump in 2017 and called the experience “great.”

He passed for 306 yards and two touchdowns in Sunday’s win.
