Kirk Broadfoot set for St Mirren return as he hooks up with Gus MacPherson again

Free agent Kirk Broadfoot is set for an emotional return to St Mirren.

The former Scotland defender secured his shock release from Kilmarnock before Monday night’s deadline.

The 35-year-old has since been approached by Buddies boss Jim Goodwin about a move to Paisley.

St Mirren have offered Broadfoot a contract for the rest of the season with an option to extend for another 12 months.

Broadfoot came through the ranks at St Mirren and had five seasons in the first-team at Love Street, helping them return to the Premier League and to lift the 2005 Challenge Cup under Gus MacPherson.

MacPherson is now sporting director at St Mirren and has played a major part in convincing Broadfoot to open talks.

The top central defender when he left Saints moved on to Rangers, where he won titles, Scotland caps and played in the UEFA Cup final.

He then had spells in England with Blackpool and Rotherham before he returned to Kilmarnock to play under Lee McCulloch in 2017.

Broadfoot was a major player as Killie finished third last season and qualified for Europe under Steve Clarke.

Angelo Alessio has since taken over at Rugby Park and Broadfoot, like many other Killie players, was unimpressed and asked to get his contract terminated.

He is now expected to hold talks with Goodwin.

He is looking for competition alongside Gary MacKenzie, who Broadfoot played with at Blackpool, and young Jack Baird.
