Kirit Somaiya assaulted at PMC building, says BJP; Shiv Sena refutes charge

PUNE: BJP leader Kirit Somaiya was allegedly manhandled by Shiv Sena workers at the Pune Municipal Corporation building on Saturday when he went there to discuss with the authorities the alleged irregularities in the Covid jumbo hospital contract.

Sena men allegedly prevented him from entering the building and demanded that he accept their memorandum listing irregularities in the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC). When Somaiya refused, they allegedly gheraoed and manhandled him. Somaiya fell on the steps in the commotion and was taken to Sancheti Hospital for treatment.

Dr Parag Sancheti, chairman of Sancheti Hospital, said Somaiya had high blood pressure, which required to be controlled. “He also had a severe contusion of his wrist and tailbone. He was advised admission in the hospital for observation, and treatment of his tailbone and wrist contusion, besides high BP. He will be discharged tomorrow (Sunday),” he said.

BJP leader Ravindra Salegaonkar, who was with Somaiya earlier in the day, said the latter had visited the Shivajinagar police station to register a complaint regarding the Covid centre contract mismanagement. “He was manhandled when he went to the PMC building for further discussions,” he said.
