Kirit Somaiya asks Bombay HC to transfer probe into assault to CBI

MUMBAI: BJP leader Kirit Somaiya moved the Bombay high court on Thursday to direct transfer of investigation related to the attacks on his life, including on April 23 in the compound of Khar police station, to CBI.

Somaiya (68), a former MP, had been there to meet MP-MLA couple Navneet and Ravi Rana who were arrested. Somaiya’s petition stated he was “brutally attacked by so-called workers of a political party, namely Shiv Sena, ruling Maharashtra at present.” Somaiya went to lodge a complaint at Bandra police station. After taking his statement, inspector Rajesh Devre filed a “fake and frivolous FIR” that was manipulated to depict the attack as “minor.”

The petition stated Somaiya did not sign the FIR and added the episode of uploading the FIR, portraying it as given by him, is “illegal and committed with a malicious intent to interfere with the administration of justice.” It said Somaiya has been crusading against corruption, has submitted evidence against ministers and has been a specific target of the ruling government. Although he has Z-security provided by CISF, the “(Mumbai) police is busy giving specific inputs to political activists about his movement.”
