Kiradech, Tiger stumble as Stenson grabs Masters lead

AUGUSTA, GEORGIA: Tiger Woods stumbled with back-to-back bogeys in Amen Corner and Thailand's only entry Kiradech Aphibarnrat ended up with seven bogeys as Sweden's Henrik Stenson led in Thursday's opening round of the 82nd Masters golf tournament.

Kiradech got off to a fair start, with pars on the first two holes, but he stumbled badly after that.

The Thai sensation finished the first round with a score of 79, seven over par. It put him near the bottom of the leaderboard. The round included eight bogeys and a single birdie.

Kiradech will need a sensational second round on Friday if he is to make the cut and play on Saturday and Sunday.

Thai-American Tiger Woods, making his first Augusta National appearance in three years, stood on 2-over par through 15 holes after sinking an eight-foot birdie putt at the par-4 14th.

Former world number one Woods, a four-time Masters champion and 14-time major winner now ranked 103, made bogeys at the par-4 11th and par-3 12th holes in famed Amen Corner, the former after hooking his tee shot way right and the latter after the ball found a watery grave in Rae's Creek.

Woods had a birdie and two bogeys on his front nine in his first major championship round since missing the cut at the 2015 PGA Championship.

That left Stenson, the 2016 British Open champion, on top at 4-under through 13 holes. He went two-under on the front nine then birdied the 11th and 13th in Amen Corner to charge into the top spot.

Canada's Adam Hadwin and American Charley Hoffman shared second on 3-under with Austrian Bernd Wiesberger the clubhouse leader at 2-under 70.

Also on the course at 2-under were Leishman, former Masters champion Jordan Spieth and Tony Finau, who dislocated his left ankle Wednesday celebrating an ace in the Par-3 Contest but popped it quickly back into place.
