Kippford dog sculptures proving hit with locals and visitors to Dumfries and Galloway visitors

Two dogs are proving quite a hit in Kippford – even if they are not real.

The wooden carvings recently appeared in the garden of The Pines, wowing visitors and locals alike.

The chainsaw art works by Sam Bowsher belong to Sarah and David Woodthorpe-Evans and resemble their real dogs Hagrid and Hermione.

Sarah joked: “I think we’re going to cause an accident. It’s only a narrow road and people drive along, see them and slow down then stop to look at them.

“We’re only just coming out of lockdown so I think it’s only going to get worse.

“They were finished in March but with lockdown we weren’t able to collect them. They’ve been up for six weeks or so.

“I had an unexpected inheritance and you have to do something with it – you can’t just go for a meal or a trip – and my cousin loved the dogs.

“The young chap that did them from Moffat is only 22 and he did a super job.”

Both Hagrid and Hermione are eight years old and named after Harry Potter characters.

Hermione is a rescue Labradoodle while Hagrid is a star in his own right.

The massive 13-stone Leonberger has appeared on various TV shows, including ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ and ‘Blue Peter’.

He is also the holder of a number of Guinness World Records, including the most sausages caught by a dog in 30 seconds.

Sarah said: “There’s clips on Youtube that have been viewed more than 15 million times.

“He is magnificent. Whenever you go into town people want to talk to you because you have a Leonberger.

“He is actually a bit big for his breed. His head is a good size and shape and he is two or three inches taller than the average Leonberger.

“He is trained for the water so if someone gets into difficulties he will swim out and bring you back to shore but if you’re in a sailing dinghy he can take a rope and pull you to shore. He’s got all sorts of talents.”
