NEWARK, N.J. _ A carryover of the previous game's chippiness was anticipated.
Instead, there was a goalie's duel.
Keith Kinkaid, trying to show he can handle a heavier workload, made 35 saves as the Devils beat the Flyers, 1-0, in overtime on defenseman John Moore's goal off a two-on-one 59 seconds into the extra period.
The Devils (28-37-14) snapped a six-game losing streak but are still just 3-14-4 since Feb. 19.
Steve Mason made 26 saves for the Flyers (38-33-9).
The Devils lost, 3-0, on Saturday night at Philadelphia as the teams combined for 82 penalty minutes for a second time this season, also hitting that penalty-parade mark in the Devils' 4-0 win at The Rock on Dec. 22.
Since that game, the Flyers have been eliminated from playoff contention with Sunday's 4-3 road loss to the Rangers. So Hobey Baker finalist Mike Vecchione and defenseman Samuel Morin, the 11th overall pick in 2013, made their NHL debuts for the Flyers. For the Devils, gritty forward Ben Thomson, 24, made his NHL debut as he and fourth-line bruiser Luke Gazdic were recalled from Albany (AHL) earlier in the day.
"This is my first year experiencing this rivalry but Philly teams have always been chippy, brash groups," Devils left wing Taylor Hall said.
Tuesday marked the seventh straight game Devils coach John Hynes has alternated Kinkaid and Cory Schneider and it was Kinkaid's fourth straight strong outing. On Friday, Kinkaid made 36 saves in a 2-1 loss to the host Islanders. He also made 30 saves in a 2-1 overtime loss to the visiting Stars on March 26.
Meanwhile, Mason, unavailable on Saturday because of illness, came into Tuesday's game 0-9-0 lifetime against the Devils with a 3.93 goals-against average and an .852 save percentage.
Kinkaid was particularly sharp in stopping all 16 shots he faced in the second period.
The Devils thought they had taken a lead on Stefan Noesen's close-range wrist shot at 9:48 of the second period. But a video review confirmed the puck did not cross the goal line.
Thomson, a fourth-round pick in 2012 with five goals, four assists and 86 penalty minutes in 69 games for Albany this season, tried to showcase his physical play, mixing it up behind the Flyers' crease at 13:34. But the Flyers mostly shied from the confrontation and Thomson wound up in the penalty box for cross checking defenseman Michael Del Zotto.
