Kingswood MP Chris Skidmore axed from Boris Johnson's Cabinet - but says sacking will allow him to be a better father

Kingswood MP Chris Skidmore has celebrated his sacking from the Cabinet by saying it will allow him to spend more time with his newborn baby Ottilie.

The Kingswood MP was axed from Boris Johnson's Cabinet this morning (Thursday) as universities minister.

But Mr Skidmore did not appear to be too disheartened by the news, saying the demotion would allow him to be a better father.

The South Gloucestershire MP tweeted: "Got a promotion in the #reshuffle to be a better Dad with more time to spend with this gorgeous little one.... Thanks everyone who I’ve had the chance to work with and the civil service teams that have supported me- you have all been amazing."

All eyes are on whether North East Somerset MP Jacob Rees-Mogg will cling to his post as Leader of the House following his comments about Grenfell fire victims, which were widely condemned as insensitive and ill-judged.

So far the Prime Minister has sacked Julian Smith as Northern Ireland secretary, Andrea Leadsom as business secretary and Esther McVey as housing minister.

Attorney General Geoffrey Cox has also been shown the door, as has Theresa Villiers, who was the environment secretary.

Those tipped to receive promotions include Berwick-upon-Tweed MP Anne-Marie Trevelyan, Cabinet Office minister Oliver Dowden, international development secretary Alok Sharma, Brexit-supporting MP Suella Braverman and Gillian Keegan.

A No.10 source said last night: "The Prime Minister wants this reshuffle to set the foundations for government now and in the future.

"He wants to promote a generation of talent that will be promoted further in the coming years.

"He will reward those MPs who have worked hard to deliver on this Government's priorities to level up the whole country and deliver the change people voted for last year."
