Kingston clothing store forced to shut due to asbestos risk

A Kingston clothing store has been forced to temporarily close for more than a week after the discovery of asbestos on site.

WorkSafe ACT issued a non-disturbance notice for vintage clothing store Marilyn on Kennedy on June 10, preventing anyone from entering the building until an inspection was carried out by asbestos assessors.

The notice was issued on the Kingston store following an anonymous tip-off to WorkSafe, a spokeswoman for the organisation said.

No other stores or businesses in the Kingston shopping precinct have been impacted by the asbestos notice.

"No one should enter, use or occupy the site until a licensed asbestos assessor analyses the possible asbestos-containing materials and advises WorkSafe ACT of the outcome," the WorkSafe spokeswoman said.

"Access to the affected workplace will be prohibited until the area is deemed safe."

Marilyn on Kennedy owner Marilena Damiano said work was under way to remove the asbestos on the site.

However, she said the store itself, and the clothes stored inside, were not affected.

"Work is being done at the moment and we are dealing with WorkSafe directly," she said.

The store had previously been closed for the past four weeks while repairs were done on a leaking toilet in the building, when the non-disturbance notice was issued.

Ms Damiano said the store was on track to reopen in coming days.

"The store itself is not affected and we'll be reopening on Saturday morning, as far as I know," she said.

"None of the stock has been impacted and I'm excited to be back and get back to normal."
