Kings Road wedding venue that has hosted celebrity nuptials from Judy Garland to Hugh Grant set to reopen after year-long renovation

A prestigious London wedding venue that has staged celebrity nuptials from Judy Garland to Notting Hill star Hugh Grant is set to reopen on the famous Kings Road after a year-long renovation project.

The stunning late Victorian building has been lovingly restored to its original glory, which has long stood as a backdrop for A-list weddings.

Vintage pictures have shown stars tying the knot at the neo-classical Grade II listed building, situated in the heart of the exclusive Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.

Now the building will resume hosting marriages, exhibitions, corporate events and private functions following the internal refurbishment of its key public areas to their former grandeur.

The heritage venue features events spaces distinguished by vaulted ceilings, marble columns, sprung wooden floor and cove lighting.

And the building plays home to the iconic Chelsea Registry Office where many glamorous people and famous faces have taken their wedding vows.

Celebrities ranging from rock legends to footballing heroes have flocked to say "I do" at the hip Chelsea spot on the street where the swinging Sixties began.

In March 1969, Judy Garland married her fifth husband Mickey Deans, a 34-year-old musician and night-club promoter, just months before her death.

The brief ceremony took place at the registry office before a reception at the iconic London restaurant Quaglino's near Piccadilly. Only 50 of the 250 invited guests turned up.

There was a three-tier cake and champagne flowed as Garland is said to have proclaimed: "This is it. For the first time in my life, I am really happy. Finally, I am loved."

Meanwhile in 1928, Bessie Wallis Warfield married her second husband Ernest Aldrich Simpson at the registry office and became Mrs Wallis Simpson.

And T. Rex singer Marc Bolan married June Child surrounded by five close friends in January, 1970.

Other stars to wed there have included Welsh actor Richard Burton, former England footballer Bobby Moore, and Hollywood actor Pierce Brosnan.

In 2018, Grant married his long-term girlfriend Anna Eberstein in an intimate ceremony at the venue.

But the most famous wedding at the site in recent years is possibly the one that didn't happen.

The Town Hall garnered international attention in September 2014 when it was rumoured that George Clooney and his now-wife Amal were getting married there.

The venue was eventually forced to make a statement insisting there would be no wedding after press and crowds gathered outside the building.

Chelsea Town Hall is set to reopen at the end of this month.

Prospective bride and grooms to be will be invited to a reopening event in the coming weeks.

The project has included redecoration, cleaning and repairs in the Main Hall, Small Hall, Cadogan Suite and Ceremony Rooms.

The works have also extended to modernising the office accommodation, along with making improvements to the Registrar's office and its reception area.
