Kingdom hoping to make futsal history

Thailand's Suphawut Thuenklang celebrates scoring a goal against the Solomon Islands.

Thailand are looking forward to making history by beating Kazakhstan to reach the quarter-finals of the Fifa Futsal World Cup in Lithuania on Thursday.

The game at Kaunas Arena will be televised live on PPTV HD at 9.30pm.

It is Thailand's third successive appearance in the last-16 round of the Futsal World Cup and they are confident that they will advance to the last eight for their best-ever finals result.

"We are ready for the match against Kazakhstan," Thailand coach Rakphol Sainetngarm said on Wednesday.

"We only have one injured player in Muhammad Ousmanmusa.

"Every player is looking forward to the game. We are confident that we can create history by reaching the quarter-finals at the Futsal World Cup for the first time."

It could be a tough task for world No.18 Thailand against world No.7 Kazakhstan who are also aiming to seal their first-ever quarter-final berth.

During the group stage, the Southeast Asians overcame a 4-1 defeat to Portugal in their opener to hold Morocco 1-1 before turning on the style in a 9-4 win over the Solomon Islands.

The Thais finished third in Group C and earned a place in the knockout stage as one of the four best third-placed sides.

Kazakhstan, who topped Group A, will be a challenge, but Thailand will be counting on the partnership of Jirawat Sornwichian and Suphawut Thuenklang -- who have scored three goals each -- to power them into the quarter-finals.

The winners will meet Iran or Uzbekistan for a spot in the semi-finals.

In the first round, Kazakhstan beat Costa Rica 6-1, defeated hosts Lithuania 3-0, and drew 1-1 with Venezuela.

Thailand are playing in their sixth Futsal World Cup, having first appeared in the tournament in 2000.

Also today, Brazil face Japan and defending champions Argentina meet Paraguay for places in the last eight.
