A rumored AAA Lord of the Rings RPG is reportedly being worked on by Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 developer Warhorse Studios
Late last year, Insider Gaming reported that Embracer Group was working on an AAA The Lord of the Rings game, with the Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO) reportedly putting roughly $100 million toward funding the game. The game is reportedly going to be a third-person action game designed to "compete with Hogwarts Legacy" (although hopefully not as absolutely mid) and will be developed by an Embracer Studio. However, outside of ADIO, Embracer, and Revenge Studios, it was unclear who else was involved in the project.
Over on ResetEra, user hiberner toujours discovered that on a Polish language Tolkien-based podcast, industry veteran Ryszard Chojnowski – who has previously worked with the likes of CD Projekt Red, BioWare, and Epic on translation work for the likes of Baldur's Gate and Fortnite – claimed that the studio behind this The Lord of the Rings title is going to be Warhorse Studios – developer of Kingdom Come Deliverance and its game of the year-nominated sequel.
According to a separate post by user Djost1kk, Chojnowski says he's heard about this from sources for several months, and that the information does seem to line up pretty well with the original rumor. Plus, in terms of developers who could make a killer Lord of the Rings game, I can't think of many better. Of course, as with any bit of info like this, it's always best to take things with a grain of salt, even if it is true, Embracer Group doesn't exactly have the best track record given its penchant for cancelling games.
We've reached out to WarHorse for comment and will update should we receive one.
I only ask that they include singing orcs, like the classic Rankin/Bass Return of the King movie.
