King: Top CB draft prospect Caleb Farley clears his medical evaluation

One of the top cornerback prospects in the 2021 NFL draft, and a potential Cleveland Browns target in the first round, is Virginia Tech’s Caleb Farley. A top-10 overall prospect on some draft boards, Farley carries considerable questions about his health.

However, in this week’s Football Morning in America, NBC’s Peter King reports that Farley received good news on his medical examination in Indianapolis last week.

After undergoing a microdiscectomy (removing a damaged section of a herniated disc) in his back March 23 in Los Angeles, Farley told me Saturday that after imaging and a thorough physical and back exam in Indianapolis, he’s been cleared by NFL docs for the 2021 season.

Farley has had two back injuries in his college career that required surgery. There is obviously some trepidation about those types of injuries to such a young player, particularly one like Farley who is heavily reliant on his outstanding athleticism to succeed. But King notes that Farley told him he expects to be fully recovered in four months, just in time for preseason.

Could Farley be in play for the Browns? It’s possible, though the team currently has a need at cornerback because of the durability issues of Greedy Williams and Denzel Ward. Adding another outside CB with ongoing health problems is a risky proposition.
