His Majesty the King has endorsed a proposal to revoke the rank of volunteer defence corps general bestowed on former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.
The announcement was published in the Royal Gazette on Sunday.
The proposal to revoke Thaksin’s volunteer defence corps general rank was put forward for royal endorsement by the Interior Ministry.
The ministry sought royal endorsement to revoke the rank from March 29 on the grounds that Thaksin was sentenced to a jail term in a final ruling by the Supreme Courts’ Criminal Division for Holders of Political Positions, is facing several other charges and has fled the kingdom.
The King earlier recalled the royal decorations bestowed on the former prime minister, citing his conviction and highly inappropriate flight from the country. The announcement was published in the Royal Gazette on March 30.
Thaksin was ousted in a 2006 coup and fled the country in 2008. The Supreme Court's Criminal Division for Holders of Political Positions sentenced Thaksin to two years in jail, convicting him of violating the National Counter Corruption Act in the Ratchadaphisek land purchase case.
