SURAT THANI: His Majesty the King has granted a royally-sponsored chanting and cremation ceremony for a cyclist who died on Sunday during the "Bike Un Ai Rak" event.

The governor also laid a royally-sponsored wreath at Wat Don Kathin in Phunphin district on behalf of His Majesty.

Sitthichai Banjerdsuk collapsed while pedalling to an assembly point for the biking activity in the province on Sunday. He was sent to Surat Thani Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Doctors said the railway official died of a sudden heart attack.

His wife, Saengchan Thongchan, said she felt proud and honoured by the sentiments expressed by the King for the family.

The biking event was held in all provinces on Sunday. In Bangkok, the King led for 39 kilometres from the Royal Plaza to Lad Pho Park in Phra Pradaeng district of Samut Prakan province.

The cremation for Sitthichai is scheduled for Sunday.
