Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz presided on Tuesday over the 40th Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) summit that was hosted by Riydah.
In his opening address, he said that the council was able to overcome crises that had plagued the region.
“The region today, is passing through challenges and circumstances that demand solidarity to confront them,” he added.
“The Iranian regime is still continuing its hostile acts to undermine security and stability and support terrorism,” he told the audience of Gulf rulers.
“This requires us to preserve the interests of our nations and people,” said King Salman. “We must work with the international community to thwart the meddling of this regime.”
The international community must also shoulder its responsibilities in confronting Iran’s nuclear and ballistic missiles programs and securing energy supplies and marine routes, he continued.
Moreover, King Salman reiterated the GCC’s firm stance towards the Palestinian cause and the Palestinian people’s right to an independent state, whose capital is East Jerusalem.
He also hailed the efforts of Yemen, starting with its government, in signing the Riyadh Agreement.
The Saudi-led Arab coalition will continue on supporting the Yemeni people and government, he added, while underlining the need to implement a political solution in the war-torn country based on the three references.
Earlier, King Salman had welcomed dignitaries as they arrived in Riyadh.
He met with Emir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, Bahrain’s King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, Vice President of the United Arab Emirates Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Oman’s deputy Prime Minister Fahd bin Mahmood Al Said and Qatari Prime Minister Prime Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser Al Thani.
