A man is fighting for life after being hit by a car which was fleeing the scene of a suspected robbery in Kings Cross.
Police said the driver of the car refused to stop for officers before driving away “at speed”.
Four men fled the vehicle after a pedestrian was mown down on York Way, at the junction with Copenhagen Street. Two men were arrested nearby, police said.
The pedestrian suffered life threatening injuries and was rushed to hospital.
Pictures posted on social media showed scores of emergency services vehicles at the scene and police cordons in place. An airbulance is understood to have landed nearby,
A Met Police spokesman said: “At around 5.30pm on Tuesday, officers responding to a robbery requested a vehicle suspected to be involved to stop.
“The driver refused to do so and drove off at speed, colliding with a member of the public.
“Four men are believed to have decamped from the vehicle and fled the scene.
“Two men were arrested nearby on suspicion of robbery and taking and driving away and taken into custody where they remain
“The male pedestrian is believed to have suffered life threatening injuries and taken to hospital where he remains."
An Independent Office for Police Conduct spokesman said: "We are investigating the circumstances of a road traffic collision in the Kings Cross area in which an elderly man was seriously injured.
"We sent investigators to the scene and the police post-incident procedure to begin our enquiries.”
