Geoffrey Rush and Neil Armfield have worked together on productions as varied as Hamlet to The Diary of a Madman. They come together again as Armfield directs this production of Shakespeare’s King Lear and Rush taking centre stage.
The ageing king (Rush) wants to retire and decides to hand his kingdom over to his three daughters and their husbands. To determine their allotment, the daughters must each publicly declare their love for their father.
To her father’s dismay, his third daughter Cordelia refuses, and nothing can quell his rage. The chaos of Lear’s imagination takes hold and not even his trusted Fool (Robyn Nevin) can draw him out of his void. He looks for constancy amid his betrayal.
