King James VI Golf Club keen to keep introducing more ladies to the sport

The start of the new season heralds an exciting time for the ladies of King James VI Golf Club.

Last year ‘The Island’ was proud to adopt the Scottish Golf Women in Golf Charter, which is part of a global initiative encouraging more women and girls to play at all levels of the sport.

As part of their ongoing commitment to inclusion, the club has run two phenomenally successful ‘Get into Golf’ sessions, led by member Moira Lumby. As a result, since the start of last July, the ladies’ section has almost doubled in size and continues to attract new members.

Now there is great hope that participation numbers can continue to grow in the coming months.

The Get into Golf Ladies, or GIGLs as they have become known at the club because of the fun they all have, were a big part of the 2021 season opening day.

One of the newest lady members, Alison Blyth, is loving the sport and was among the prizewinners last weekend.

She said: “Learning to play golf in 2020 has been an amazing experience. I would never have believed how uplifting it could be.

“Fresh air, exercise, meeting new friends and having the best laughs. I recommend it for everyone.

“I was grinning from ear to ear having won a prize for best nine holes score over the winter season for beginners.”

Another GIGL, Isobel Butt, won the nearest the hole competition at the club’s opening day last weekend.

Captain David Angus is delighted with how the club has continued to go from strength to strength despite the coronavirus pandemic.

“Our membership continues to grow and seeing the new ladies enjoying the sport, the friendliness of our club, and scooping prizes is brilliant,” David explained this week.

Building on the success, the club is about to run a third Get into Golf session, starting on April 11.

Recently the club has signed up the services of local golf professional, Gregor Wright, who has earned a growing reputation as an excellent coach.

Gregor will be providing small group lessons for the Get into Golf sessions.

Ladies from the club will provide support during lessons and offer twice weekly practice sessions out on the course throughout the season.
