Analysis: The gift of a shiny gold bell from the King did not make Trump listen on Iran
04:30 , Sam KileyPresenting the U.S. president with a shiny bell bearing the word Trump engraved upon it could have been a master stroke of soft power diplomacy by the King. Indeed, the artifact from the late submarine HMS Trump may yet keep the US president’s sentimental affection for some things British.
However, the bauble from the wartime boat, decommissioned and chopped up for scrap in 1971, does not appear to have had any mitigating effect on Trump’s public antics – or his international diplomacy.

New York mayor Mamdani says he would encourage King Charles to return Koh-i-Noor diamond
04:02 , Shweta SharmaNew York City mayor Zohran Mamdani said on Wednesday he would encourage King Charles to return the 105.6-carat Koh-i-Noor diamond, with his comments coming during the monarch's ongoing US visit.
"If I were to speak to the King separately from that, I would probably encourage him to return the Koh-i-Noor Diamond," Mamdani, who is Indian American, said when asked at a press conference hours before a ceremony that commemorated victims of the deadly September 11 2001, attacks.
While Mamdani later met King Charles at the commemorative event, it remains unclear whether the issue was raised directly in their conversation. Buckingham Palace declined to comment, and Mamdani’s office did not confirm any discussion on the matter.

His comments have once again revived the long-running debate over the Koh-i-Noor diamond as India has previously repeatedly demanded that Britain return the 105-carat diamond.
Britain's then colonial governor-general of India arranged for the huge diamond to be presented to Queen Victoria in 1850 after the East India Company had annexed the region of Punjab in 1849 and taken the diamond from a deposed Indian leader.
India has previously said the diamond was a "valued piece of art with strong roots in our nation's history."
The diamond's possession by the British is seen by many Indians as a symbol of colonial atrocities during British rule.
The diamond has been previously owned by India's Mughal emperors, shahs of Iran, emirs of Afghanistan, and Sikh maharajas, according to the Historic Royal Palaces charity.

President Trump asked about King Charles' comments in support of NATO, Ukraine
Wednesday 29 April 2026 19:48 , Isabel KeanePresident Donald Trump was asked about remarks King Charles made about NATO and Ukraine during his speech to Congress on Tuesday.
During his address, King Charles defended the role of NATO following criticism from Trump that the alliance was not being supportive enough of his war against Iran.
At the start of his speech, Charles said: “We meet in times of great uncertainty, in times of conflict from Europe to the Middle East which pose immense challenges for the international community and whose impact is felt in communities the length and breadth of our own countries.”
“From the depths of the Atlantic to the disastrously melting ice-caps of the Arctic, the commitment and expertise of the United States Armed Forces and its allies lie at the heart of NATO, pledged to each other’s defence, protecting our citizens and interests, keeping North Americans and Europeans safe from our common adversaries,” he said.
King Charles looked to the 25th anniversary of 9/11, noting that it was the first time NATO invoked Article 5, and the United Nations Security Council put on a united front.

“We answered the call together – as our people have done so for more than a century, shoulder to shoulder, through two World Wars, the Cold War, Afghanistan and moments that have defined our shared security,” he said. “Today, Mr Speaker, that same, unyielding resolve is needed for the defence of Ukraine and her most courageous people.
“It is needed in order to secure a truly just and lasting peace.”
On Wednesday, Trump was asked by a reporter if King Charles’ remarks had changed his line of thinking.
“I was very disappointed with the fact that when we called on them to give us a little hand, we didn't need it. I actually did it just to see whether or not they'd be there when we called on NATO to give us a hand with Ukraine, and in particular...we asked them to do certain things on Ukraine, and we also wanted them to do things with Iran. And in Ukraine, they're very much involved but they didn't do things the way we would like to, and...it's been going on for a long time in Iran,” he said.
Trump continued:They weren't there as you know. And they weren't there, as you know, you know it better than anybody. They weren't there. The King is fantastic. We spent a lot of time together. We had a lot of talk. We talked about this also, and he loves his country, and he's a great king, and he's a great friend of mine. And I think if he were doing that, if that were up to him, he would have probably helped us with Iran. He would have followed the suggestions we made with respect to Ukraine, because, you know, we have some disagreements on Ukraine, not having to do with NATO so much as European countries.”
“But no, he, he, you know, he's coming back tomorrow. We had an incredible evening last night, and he's leaving tomorrow. He's going to come back and see us before he leaves. And, you know, I think he's a phenomenal representative for his country. I think the people in the United Kingdom should be proud. I loved his speech yesterday. I watched it. I loved the speech last night. I don't know about my speech. I thought my speech was okay, too, but I thought he was. I think he's an unbelievable King, and, by the way, an unbelievable queen. They are a great couple,” Trump said.
After visiting the 9/11 memorial in downtown Manhattan, King Charles made his way uptown to attend a community engagement event in Harlem.
King Charles arrived at Harlem Grown’s urban farm just after 2 p.m.. The non-profit provides programs for local students. There, the King is expected to meet with community members and students.

In remarks likely to exacerbate growing animosity from the Trump administration towards Downing Street, Sir Christian Turner also said it was “extraordinary” that the Jeffrey Epstein scandal had failed to bring down any notable figures in the US.
The comments will also bring discomfort to King Charles, who is currently visiting the White House where he was welcomed in an address by Donald Trump, who hailed the “cherished bond” between the countries.

He became the second monarch, after his mother Queen Elizabeth II, to stand and speak in front of representatives in the iconic US Capitol Building. The King is currently visiting Washington DC for a four-day state visit that many hope will appease US president Donald Trump, as relations with the UK are currently in a difficult place.
Key takeaways from the address include his remarks on the UK-US relationship, his defence of Nato, and an absence of a mention for Epstein’s survivors.

Charles and Camilla are set to travel to New York on the third day of their state visit, where they will visit the 9/11 memorial around 1pm local time (6pm BST) marking the approach of the 25th anniversary of the 11 September attacks.

While Winnie, Tigger, Piglet, Kanga and Eeyore are all on display, the original baby kangaroo toy, Roo, was lost in an apple orchard in the 1930s.

Trump drags King Charles into Iran row with nuclear weapons claim
Wednesday 29 April 2026 09:30 , Nicole Wootton-CaneDonald Trump has insisted that the King shares his conviction that Iran must never be permitted to develop nuclear weapons, a claim likely to cause unease within royal circles given the monarch’s constitutional neutrality.
The US President made the remarks during a White House state dinner held in honour of the visiting King and Queen Camilla, following bilateral discussions earlier in the day.
As head of state, the King traditionally remains above party politics, making Mr Trump’s public declaration of his views potentially embarrassing for royal aides.
Speaking at the white-tie event on Tuesday evening, Mr Trump stated: "We’re doing a little Middle East work right now… and we’re doing very well.
“We have militarily defeated that particular opponent, and we’re never going to let that opponent ever, Charles agrees with me even more than I do, we’re never going to let that opponent have a nuclear weapon. They know that, and they’ve known it right now, very powerfully."

He said among the messages the King wanted to get across was the idea “that we’re much stronger together than we are apart and that we must accept that we won’t always agree on everything and work through those differences”.
He added Charles had also referred to the “values” that underpin our system including “checks and balances”.
“I think it will stabilise things,” he said. “I have no doubt that it has given the relationship much-needed breathing space.”

How King and Queen's second day in the US unfolded
Wednesday 29 April 2026 08:00 , Shweta SharmaThe second day of King Charles’ four-day US visit is coming to an end. The British monarch’s day was busy as it began with a meeting with Donald Trump and was followed by his historic address to Congress, concluding with a state dinner at the White House. Here's how the second day of the visit unfolded:
- Trump hosted King Charles at the White House with a speech celebrating the evolution of US-UK ties. In his South Lawn remarks, he paid tribute to his late parents – noting his mother’s British roots – and reiterated his admiration for the royal family, even jokingly calling the King “cute.”
- King Charles delivered a speech to a joint meeting of Congress, opening with a reference to Saturday’s shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, stressing that such violence “will never succeed.” He also honoured Queen Elizabeth II, praised Nato, underscored the enduring US–UK partnership, and reminded lawmakers that American influence carries “weight and meaning.”
- The White House on social media shared a photo of Trump and Charles with the caption "TWO KINGS." Trump and his allies have repeatedly objected to the "No Kings" protests against his administration, saying that he is not a king, and this week have accused critics of the president of fanning flames of anger that have led to attempts on his life.
- The evening’s state dinner drew a wide-ranging guest list – from British royals and cabinet members to media personalities and business leaders. In his toast, Trump highlighted the “special relationship” between the two countries. Charles, in turn, added humour with a quip about Trump’s proposed East Wing ballroom, and presented him with a bell from a former British Navy submarine – a symbolic nod to military cooperation.

Wednesday 29 April 2026 07:30 , Shweta SharmaDays after calling for comedian Jimmy Kimmel to lose his job after mocking the near quarter-century age gap between President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump, the president used the same subject matter as fodder for a joke in his speech welcoming King Charles III to the White House on Tuesday.
Trump was working his way through meandering remarks at the end of a formal arrival ceremony on the South Lawn when he segued from meditating on the deep friendship that has developed between the U.S. and U.K. over the 250 years since American independence to his Scottish-born mother, Mary McLeod Trump’s admiration for the late Queen Elizabeth II.
As Trump noted how his mother had emigrated from Scotland to the U.S. at age 19 and entered into what would be a 63-year marriage with his father, he turned back to the first lady, who was seated with Queen Camilla behind him.

King Charles meets US tech leaders to discuss startup challenges
Wednesday 29 April 2026 07:12 , Shweta SharmaKing Charles met with US tech leaders on Tuesday as part of his four-day state visit, discussing challenges for early-stage startups as the UK touts itself as a top destination for technology firms.
Among the leaders Charles met with were Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, Apple CEO Tim Cook, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, Advanced Micro Devices CEO Lisa Su, Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff and Alphabet President Ruth Porat.
Charles noted issues facing companies formed from work at universities and the difficulty of those startups getting funding. "These are the people I always think have the greatest difficulty getting off the ground," he told the CEOs.

"They get into this terrible valley of death."Huang noted big areas of opportunity, such as AI and quantum robotics: "We just need a vibrant VC ecosystem and a startup culture," he told the King, referring to venture capital.
Charles responded, "You're all deadly competitors," to laughter.
Huang joked back: "No one has to die." King Charles responded, "Really?" to more laughter.
Bezos recounted starting Amazon in 1995 and that he struggled to raise $1m from investors, $50,000 at a time, and noted 40 said no.
The King responded, "And all those 40 are kicking themselves," to wide laughter.
Charles compared people who passed up investing in Amazon to the Harry Potter books and how many publishers turned down the book.

Wednesday 29 April 2026 06:12 , Shweta SharmaKing Charles brought a touch of wit to the White House state dinner, joking that Donald Trump might well have been “speaking French” if it were not for Britain’s role in history.
“Indeed, you recently commented, Mr. President, that if it were not for the United States, European countries would be speaking German,” the King said.
“Dare I say that, if it wasn’t for us, you’d be speaking French…!"
He quickly adds that "of course, we both love our French cousins greatly".

Trump says King agrees with him on Iran as British monarch stays silent
Wednesday 29 April 2026 04:27 , Shweta SharmaAt a glittering state dinner at the White House, Donald Trump brought an unexpected edge to the evening, by saying the British monarch agrees with him on Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
Speaking to guests, Trump struck a confident tone about developments in the Middle East.
“We’re doing a little Middle East work right now and we’re doing very well,” he said.
He went on to claim military success against the adversary, adding that the US would “never” allow that opponent to obtain a nuclear weapon – and pointedly suggested that King Charles shared that view.
“Charles agrees with me even more than I do,” Trump quipped, before reiterating that Iran would not be allowed to develop nuclear arms.
In his own comments after Trump spoke, Charles did not speak about Iran or the Iran war.
As a constitutional monarch, he does not speak on behalf of the British government, and his comments remained focused on broader themes rather than geopolitics.
Instead, he offered a more measured reflection on global security, acknowledging tensions within Nato, stressing the importance of continued US support for Ukraine in its war with Russia, and warning against the risks of isolationism.
Despite the diplomatic tightrope on display, there is a longstanding alignment between the UK and the US on one key point: both countries maintain that Iran must not acquire nuclear weapons.
