King Charles to be presented with Scottish Crown Jewels at special ceremony in Edinburgh

Thousands of people are expected to line the streets of the Royal Mile next month as King Charles is to be presented with the Honours of Scotland.

The monarch is set to attend a special event in Edinburgh as he receives the Scottish Crown Jewels at St Giles' Cathedral, it has been announced by Buckingham Palace.

First there will be a "people's procession" in the capital before Charles is presented with the historical Honours on July 5.

The Red Arrows will also be on hand to pay tribute to the King and Queen, who will be visiting Scotland for the first time officially since they were crowned at Westminster Abbey on May 6.

The King is also due to host a garden party at the Palace of Holyroodhouse on July 4.

The jewels include a crown created for James V in the 16th century, a 3ft-long sceptre and a 5ft-long sword of state. They'll be collected from Edinburgh Castle by a procession, involving around 100 people representing aspects of Scottish life, before travelling from the Palace of Holyroodhouse to the Cathedral with a military escort.

There will also be a 21-gun salute and a fly past from the aerial display team after the ceremony.

First Minister Humza Yousaf said: “Scotland will welcome the new King and Queen in July with a series of events to mark the coronation. A people’s procession, a royal procession, a national service of thanksgiving and a gun salute will take place in Edinburgh.

“Representatives from many different communities and organisations in Scotland will take part in these historic events.

“People who wish to mark this historic occasion can get involved by watching broadcast coverage or viewing events in person. We will issue more information confirming how members of the public can access events in the coming weeks.”
