British playwright Mike Bartlett’s play imagines the aftermath of the death of Queen Elizabeth II, when Prince Charles ascends the throne. It confronts the contradictions of monarchy and democracy with wisdom and wit, taking off the crown to expose what might be underneath.
King Charles III, which won the 2015 Olivier award for best new play, puts a Shakespearean lens on the world’s most famous family. Directed by North London’s Almeida Theatre artistic director Rupert Goold, the production is at Sydney Theatre Company in an Australian exclusive.
