King Charles coronation holiday in May as schools to close for the day

Staff at North Ayrshire Council and pupils and school employees across the community will enjoy an extra day’s holiday in the Spring.

The UK Government previously announced that Monday, May 8 will be marked as an official extra bank holiday to mark King Charles III's Coronation.

It has been agreed that North Ayrshire Council will recognise the additional Bank Holiday, and therefore employees will receive an additional day off to mark the event.

The day off comes just a week after the May Day holiday.

King Charles III, well-kent in the area through his regular visits to Dumfries House in East Ayrshire, took over from his mother, Queen Elizabeth II following her death at Balmoral Castle on September 8.

The actual Coronation takes place on Saturday, May 6 and is set to be a global event with a TV audience of billions, although it is expected to be more low key then the last one 70 years ago.

King Charles III is to put refugees and the NHS at the heart of a diverse Coronation that will bring the nation together in a three-day celebration designed to reflect modern, multi-cultural Britain.

A Coronation Choir made up of amateur singers representing the nation’s “faces and voices”, including LGBTQ+ groups and deaf signers, will perform at a star-studded concert at Windsor Castle on Sunday May 7.
