King Charles' coronation dates and will I get a bank holiday for it?

As we close in on the official day King Charles will be crowned, many people will be getting the bunting out and the food organised for a good old street party in his honour.

The King's coronation will take place on Saturday, May 6, and the following Monday - May 8 - has also been declared an extra bank holiday.

The Mirror reports that many people will be enjoying a long weekend thanks to the ceremony - but who will be missing out?

Scotland will get the extra bank holiday on top of their usual days alongside the rest of the UK - but some people aren't automatically entitled to a day off.

Jayne Holliday, legal director at law firm Higgs LLP, has broken down people's employments rights, and who will be entitled to the coronation bank holiday.

Noticeably, there is no statutory right for people to take the bank holiday off, it is down to what is written in each individual's contract.

Jayne said: "Many contracts will entitle an employee to a certain number of days annual leave plus bank holidays.

“Clearly that covers May 8 and those employees can get the bunting out.

“However, other contracts will specify the number of days annual leave allowed plus the eight usual bank holidays.

“If a contract specifically says the usual bank holidays, then it will not automatically cover this additional bank holiday.”

If you do want the day off, but don't know if you have it, it is recommended to discuss it with your bosses as soon as possible.

Any worker who is not entitled to the day off but refuses to work could face disciplinary action. But this can all change if the business opts to close for the day to enjoy the time off.

The legal director said: "If the doors are closed and an employee can’t come in then businesses should give them the day off and pay them.

“In this case, employers cannot force their workers to take a day out of their annual leave entitlement.

“If it’s possible to work from home then that could be a possibility, but that isn’t going to be feasible for everyone.

“For example, many will face childcare issues if there are children at home who are usually at nursery or school.

“Employees are entitled to take dependants’ leave, which is unpaid leave for unexpected circumstances.”
