King Charles and Queen Camilla make surprise appearance on American Idol after Coronation

King Charles and Queen Camilla made an unexpected appearance on US talent show, American Idol.

The royals posed as judges alongside current judges Lionel Richie and Katy Perry, as they virtually "checked in" with fellow judge Ryan Seacrest.

Before the royal couple made their debut, Ryan asked Katy and Lionel how the historic festivities were going in the UK.

"It was incredible and we're here for the coronation concert at Windsor Castle,' Katy replied and Lionel added: "Now we are trying to figure out what we can do to bring something different to the show.

"So, ...I have a surprise," he teased before King Charles, 74 and Queen Camilla, 75, walked out and joined them.

Katy appeared to bow down in their presence, before gasping and saying: "Oh goodness."

"I just wanted to check how long you will be using this room for," King Charles said laughing. "I just wanted to check."

"Thank you for your brilliant performance and thank Katy as well. It really was," he added before stating that it was "great to have you both here."

Once King Charles and Queen Camilla left the room, Ryan said: "That is the royal treatment. I found myself standing up straighter while I was watching that right there."

Meanwhile, Stateside, Ed Sheeran and Alanis Morissette filled in as judges for Katy and Lionel for the 21st season of the show which featured performances from the top eight singers.

Ed took to SiriusXM's The Morning Mash Up to clear up rumours that he'd turned down the Coronation gig and confirmed that he wasn't asked to perform at the historic event.

"I want to clear something up actually because there was loads of stuff in the press that I turned down the coronation and no one ever asked me ever.

“Obviously press had the negative story of loads of people turning down the coronation, but I never ever turned it down,” Ed continued.

"I wasn’t asked, but yeah, I’m excited to tune into that. It’s historic, isn’t it?”
