Kindhearted Dubliners hang up coats on Ha'penny Bridge for the homeless

As the mercury plummets in Dublin, kindhearted locals have been hanging up spare coats on the Ha’penny Bridge.

The country was left shocked after recent figures showed there are now a record 10,514 people homeless in Ireland, including more than 3,800 children.

The picture of the coats on the iconic Liffey footbridge has been shared on social media by The Irishtown House pub.

A sign next to the jackets says: “If you need one, then please take one. If you want to help, please hang one up. #warmforwinter”

Social media users praised the initiative with one person said: “What a great way to show kindness and caring.”

Another person said: “Brilliant! Well done!”

A third person hit out at the Government saying: “This is a great idea!! Meanwhile, the government wants to spend €20,000,000 on white water raft centre, and we have a major homeless and hospital/home care disasters going on in the country. Priorities!!!”

On Tuesday night Housing Minister Eoghan Murphy survived a motion of no confidence in the Dail.

The Minister was saved by TDs who voted by 56 votes to 53 against the motion, with 35 TDs abstaining.

It is the second time in just over a year that opposition politicians have called for his head through a motion of no confidence as homeless figures soared to their highest level ever.
