Scots Motown singer delighting neighbours with weekly sing-along outside home

A singer is delighting his neighbours by belting out Motown hits during a weekly concert outside his Tullichewan home.

Wayne Topley, who performs with his band Motown Brothers at venues across the UK, has been staging mini shows from his garden.

Soul favourites from All Night Long to Love Train have been ringing out from Russell Drive every Sunday afternoon.

Neighbours have been joining in by dancing and singing along and even local police officers, who turned up to check everyone was keeping to the rules, are said to have enjoyed a shimmy.

Wife Kelly said the whole street has been getting involved and it is so popular, it is now a weekly event.

She said: “He’s had an incredible response. The neighbours absolutely love it.

“We weren’t expecting such a big crowd as we don’t know all the neighbours in the street but so many came out and were singing, dancing and clapping.

“Many of them wouldn’t have known Wayne sang for a living either so it would have been a surprise to them.”

Wayne has had the band for 12 years and usually performs every weekend all over the UK with fellow members David Wilson and Morgan Motika.

The group travel to venues across the Scotland and visit Derry in Northern Ireland every month for a regular slot.

Kelly added: “He said not being able to do it is like having is right arm cut off so he decided to keep it going in a different way.

“Originally, he did a live for the Motown Brothers page and they were going to get all three together but couldn’t due to technical difficulties.

“Wayne did his own by himself in the house and got a great response. It had 30,000 views and people said it really lifted their spirits.

“Some of the neighbours said he should do one in the street so we contacted the police first and they supported it and said it was fine as long as people stuck to social distancing.

“He set it all up in the garden and it was such a nice day so everyone was out.

“People of all ages, from kids dancing to older neighbours clapping, were enjoying themselves.

“The police came along to check everything was okay and even they had a dance!”

The couple, who have a daughter four-year-old Mia and have three other children between them, have turned the weekly performance into a neighbourhood street party and have started organising street bingo games in between Wayne’s breaks.

Kelly added: “Wayne said if everyone enjoyed it, he would do it again so it will be happening every Sunday as long as people enjoy it.”
