Kind schoolgirl moved to help others by stay in hospital

A compassionate eight-year-old girl has gone on to help countless other children after suffering in hospital herself.

Scarlet Winder, from Netherton, was in hospital about a month ago and had to undergo an operation to have baby teeth removed.

Born six weeks premature, the schoolgirl needed the treatment and was only able to take one parent in with her because of social distancing guidelines.

While in Alder Hey Children's Hospital and in pain, dad Andrew Winder said Scarlet was more focused on the plight of other children than herself.

The 32-year-old said: "She was dead scared when she went to hospital, she had to get put to sleep and she was really scared. When she woke up, she woke up in the department where certain kids have had procedures done and they're just in recovery.

"And for the first hour she was just really confused and her mouth was bleeding. She was still trying to come to, so I bought her a sticker book from the gift shop and that was just to keep her mind occupied, as parents do.

"After an hour, she starts to slowly get back to herself and she's panicking less, but she saw a little girl a couple of beds across from her.

"The little girl looked dead sad and Scarlet asked 'how come she doesn't have a colouring book' so I kind of explained maybe her mum and dad just forgot to bring one, or maybe they can't afford one because sometimes families can't.

"Then she started asking about the rest of kids in hospital and as I told her everything, her brain started ticking and she said they must get really bored, then she said 'dad can we raise money for them so we can buy them things?'

"Obviously, my heart just melted."

Moved by the other children receiving care, Scarlet decided she wanted to help.

The young girl was able to raise thousands, despite lockdown restrictions in Merseyside tightening.

Scarlet and Andrew announced on social media they wanted to raise money and asked followers for goals, with fundraising starting at £500 at first.

Using Andrew's Facebook page, Sweets and Treats Liverpool, which has a big following, the pair started to raise funds quickly.

Andrew said: "Straight away she was telling everyone what she wanted to do and what her mission was.

"The page isn't a charity page, but I try to help people within my limits with it. I mentioned on a live stream we wanted to fundraise.

"We set the target at £500 and the whole focus was on Scarlet and we started doing a few games, raffles and saving money.

"I told everyone I would do a 12-hour long stream, which has now done my back in. People were amazing in donating prizes and gifts."

The pair managed to raise £2,750, which all went towards buying arts and crafts sets, colouring books and various items to keep children entertained in hospital.

All items were donated to children in Alder Hey Hospital.

Andrew said: "What really got to me was she was thinking of other kids while she herself was still in pain.

"It melts my heart every time knowing that my little girl is thinking of others instead of herself. It makes me massively proud to know that she wanted to help others.

"From the very start to the very end, she's been thinking about the kids. Not once has she even thought about asking for one of the items."

Andrew and Scarlet couldn't physically give the gifts due to the coronavirus pandemic, but it's understood Alder Hey could share posts on their social media when the items are handed out.
