Kind offer to Perth flats blaze families

A Perthshire store has offered to donate household goods and furniture to residents whose homes were damaged in a Perth tenement fire.

Managers at the British Heart Foundation Furniture and Electrical store at the Inveralmond Retail Park are offering furniture and household goods after a mid-night blaze on the ground floor of a Menzies Court block of flats last Friday, May 31.

Perth fire crews rescued 14 people from the fire with 12 residents taken by ambulance to PRI and two to Ninewells Hospital for treatment.

The resulting fire and smoke damage, however, means many residents are currently unable to return to their homes - and that is where store manager Kirsty Strang and assistant manager Stuart Murie thought they could step in.

Stuart said: “I saw what happened on the news and in the paper - then it hit me that we could help.

“No one would want to be in their position.

“If they need anything in house we can donate it.

“It is something only this store in the charity is doing.

“As a charity, if we can help we will do it.

“The quality might not be the best but we have used furniture we can give to them.

“We can also supply beds, chairs, tables, cupboards, sofas and wardrobes.

“We also have smaller electrics and things like pots and pans among other things.

“If they can come in store and talk to us about it we could set it up for them.

“If Fairfield Housing or the council could get the people’s details and get in touch we can stir something up.

“Anything we can do to help we will.

“To help the community rebuild and stick together, we will try our best to do that.”

The fire crews received praise for their actions from Perth City North councillors John Rebbeck and Dave Doogan as well as Perth and North Perthshire MP, Pete Wishart.

The two councillors also sought assurances that residents affected by the tenement blaze are supported by the council and Fairfield Housing “to return to their homes or are rehoused as a matter of urgency.”
