Edinburgh Live have been reporting on pictures of empty supermarket shelves, as panic buying continues to rise, amid fears of the COVID-19 outbreak in Scotland.

The deadly virus has the highest mortality rate for those who are elderly or have underlying health issues.

A West Lothian taxi company is doing their bit, to make sure local elderly people can get their shopping in case they need to self isolate.

Alba Private Hire in Bathgate are offering a free taxi service to elderly people in the local area, who want to go to Tesco supermarket.

Alba Private Hire took to social media to announce that they would be offering a free taxi service to the elderly on Friday 13 March between 9.30-10.30 and 1.30-2.30

The owner of Alba Privare Hire spoke to Edinburgh live about what inspired the kind gesture.

She said: "It was me and my controllers idea, we had been discussing everything that's been happening and we were worried for elderly people in the local area.

"It's our way of giving back and helping out the local community."

The kind gesture has received an outpouring of praise on social media, with one woman saying: "Fantastic! I hope there is essential items left for the vulnerable and elderly to buy."

Another local said: "That's great. We should all be following this example and helping neighbour's family friends anyone that is housebound etc."
