Kind-hearted volunteers hand out scarves and gloves to the homeless in Newcastle city centre

A caring group of volunteers braced icy conditions on New Year’s Eve to hand out warm clothing to those forced to endure freezing temperatures.

Taking to the streets of Newcastle city centre, seven kind-hearted women from Newcastle’s Ahmadiyya Muslim Association (AMA) handed out coats, socks, hats and food to homeless people.

The generous group handed out around £200 worth of clothing to homeless people, which was funded by donations from members of the Muslim community.

Shafia Saeed, from Gateshead, who organised the donation, said: “When we gave out the jackets, two ladies hugged me and they were about to cry.

“One of them said that they felt like they were going to die that night because they were that cold.

“That moment was so overwhelming and it made me realise that we need to do more to help.”

In one hour, the young volunteers aged between 16 and 30 provided warm jackets for 11 homeless people, before sharing the extra essentials between those in need.

Safia, who has volunteered with AMA for 10 years, added: “When we were out it was absolutely freezing and you could see the people on the street literally shivering.

“I can’t even explain how grateful people were to receive something warm.”

Safia said the evening was organised as a way to help her community, which is paramount to the Muslim faith she follows.

The Ahmadiyya Muslim community is the world’s largest Islamic community, with millions of members internationally, embracing the importance of peace and love.
