Kind-hearted school kids throw party for homeless charity Cork Penny Dinners

A kind-hearted gesture by a group of young Irish schoolboys has been widely applauded.

The boys, from CBC Prep school in Cork city, were given a chance to throw a party for themselves and their friends, to mark their first year in school together.

And when their parents offered them the chance to either get presents, or do something to help others, they did a bit of research and picked out the famous Penny Dinners charity as the one to benefit.

"They are all only just turned ten, but they know that there is a problem with homelessness in Cork and they decided they wanted to make a difference," Niamh Power, one of the boy's mums, told CorkBeo .

"It started out as them wanting to raise around by collecting from their classmates and families. In the end, they raised €1,070 euros and presented it to Penny Dinners".

Niamh, from Ballincollig, is mum to Max, one of the four boys from CBC who was involved in raising the money.

They initially raised just over €800 and the amount was topped up to a thousand with a donation from the Neil Prendeville Show on Cork's RedFM.

After raising the money, the four boys, Max, Jack, Theo and Donal, then asked their parents if they could visit Penny Dinners in the city centre and help out a little more.

"They were struck by how the charity was founded in 1888, the same year as their own school. They wanted to make sandwiches in the kitchen and meet the people there.

"They got the most amazing, warm reception from Caitriona and her team at Penny Dinners and from the people who use their services," says Niamh.

"They know there are children their own age who depend on the charity to get their meals and they were very impressed at how Penny Dinners will deliver meals to B&Bs where kids as young as them are staying in emergency accomodation, because the charity thinks it's better that kids that young don't have to come into them for their meals".

Niamh says the experience of spending the morning meeting the volunteers and the homeless people served by Penny Dinners was, for all of them; "One of the most emotional mornings we have ever had - it was an amazing life experience for them".

"They got to see what was happening to people in their own city, to meet and talk with everybody, one man sang them a song, they went into the kitchens and helped out, it was a very special morning".

The boys will now do a presentation to their entire school about what they saw and what they hope to do in the future for the venerable Cork charity and the hundreds of people they help every day.
