Kind-hearted Rutherglen woman ready to brave the shave to support cancer charity

A Lanarkshire woman is set for a drastic haircut in aid of a good cause.

Nikki Beacham will brave the shave on November 6 to support MacMillan Cancer Care, and she has already doubled her target with pledges.

The 35-year-old from Rutherglen has had family and friends diagnosed with the disease, including her nana, Grace, who sadly passed away through cancer.

Nikki, a mum-of-three, decided she wanted to do something to help MacMillan, for the care and support she saw them offer to patients.

She told Lanarkshire Live: "I wanted to do this a wee while ago, but then the pandemic happened, and I was also pregnant. I was always going to come back to doing it though, and I was thinking at first that I'd do it next year.

"Then a couple of weeks ago I just went 'what's the point in hanging about'.

"So many people are affected by cancer and I wanted to do something to help MacMillan, who are brilliant. They helped my nana so much, and also one of my friends when he was diagnosed with cancer.

"I've got a chance to have hair in a way that people with cancer sometimes don't, so that's why I was happy to shave it all off."

Nikki says she isn't fussed about shedding her curly locks, although admits she might change her mind after November 6.

She laughed: "I'm sure I'll go what have I done afterwards but it's only hair at the end of the day, and it will grow back.

"My husband Brian and the kids have been really supportive too - Brian's been saying that I'll absolutely rock it."

Nikki's also been thrilled at the support she's received from pals. Initially she set a target of £300 to raise but she's already earned £630 with weeks still to go before the haircut takes place.

She added: "I couldn't believe that people were happy to donate so quickly. I've had friends and family supporting me, but my husband's work colleagues have all been chipping in, and I had a donation from Mammy Made It in Rutherglen Exchange, where I'm a customer.

"Support like that has been really great to have."

Nikki will be getting her haircut at Evissa hair salon on Hamilton Road on Saturday November 6. Anyone wishing to donate to the good cause can do so here.
