Kind-hearted musicians launch Christmas single bid for Rugby League ace Rob Burrow

Three musicians have launched a Christmas single in a bid to reach the No7 spot, in aid of Rob Burrow.

While the race for the Christmas number one is hotting up, the kind-hearted musical group are hoping to secure the Christmas number seven spot for the Rugby League legend’s quest to build a state-of-the-art MND centre to help people living with the killer disease.

The Christmas charity single “Welcome” has been put together by songwriters Tony Hall, Steve Jones and Ian Thompson, who were moved to tears by the story of Rob and his wife Lindsey.

Former England ace Rob, who famously wore the number seven shirt for Leeds Rhinos and his country, was diagnosed with motor neurone disease in December 2019 and since then has publicly championed raising funds and awareness for everyone impacted by the disease.

The father-of-three has featured in an award-winning documentary and penned a best-selling autobiography, but his biggest goal is to realise the dream of a new £50m MND Care Centre in Leeds.

During recent months Tony, Steve and Ian, who play in the band Try, put out a call for collaborators which led to an eclectic mix of musicians and technicians donating their time and skills for free to bring the song to life.

Kevin Sinfield OBE, who has raised over £5m in the last year through his epic challenges, has thrown his support behind the record.

He said “I know that Christmas is a very special time for every family especially for Rob and his young children. I am sure everyone will enjoy the single and play their part in helping it to rise up the charts and raise the fundraising total at the same time.”

Welcome’ is available on all the usual download services and can also be bought as a gift with a personal message that can be forwarded to friends and families’ e-mail accounts from the iTunes website.

Rob said: “The single ‘Welcome’ sums up the spirit of providing a Centre for everyone affected by MND here in Leeds. I would like to thank everyone who provided their talent to make the single possible. Hopefully we can come together to make this the biggest Christmas Welcome possible.”
