Kind-hearted Dumfries youngster painting stones to share with local community during coronavirus lockdown

A Dumfries youngster has been wearing her he-ART on her sleeve to show how much she cares about her community in lockdown.

Caring and creative eight-year-old Maya Skachill searched for a thoughtful art project to emphasis her feelings about the coronavirus pandemic when her teacher at Georgetown Primary asked the class to carry out some acts of kindness.

And she turned to stones collected on her daily walk with mum, Sarah, for inspiration to leave for others to collect and take home as a gift.

Her mum said: “She’s always drawing pictures for her family and friends. Throughout this pandemic she wanted to do something kind for others and she decided to handpaint some stones we collected on our walls and cleaned them up. She knows we can’t thank every key worker enough for everything they’re doing.”

Maya thought about frontline workers in the Covid-19 battle in the region and painted designs on the stones to match their jobs.

She originally set up a stall at the bottom of her road in Dumfries and then left more stones outside Georgetown Primary – spraying them with sanitiser to make them safe to handle.

Maya said: “Coronavirus is making us all sad. I made the stones to make people happy. I loved seeing how many were taken.”

She has been delighted with all the social media messages and photos from people saying how happy they were to pick up a stone and take it home.
