Kind-hearted Dumfries runners embark on fundraising challenge for Maggie's Centre

Two big-hearted Dumfries women have embarked on a winter running challenge in a bid to raise cash for cancer sufferers.

Jenna McCrone was inspired to run 50 miles in January to boost funds at Edinburgh’s Maggies Centre in memory of her late mum.

The facility, based at the capital’s Western General Hospital, provides a home base for those who have travelled to undergo cancer treatment at the site.

Auxiliary nurse Jenna’s mum Alison Fleming used the centre while she received treatment, before she passed away in December 2015 following a battle with the disease.

The 33-year-old told the Standard: “I had always wanted to do something in my mum’s memory but didn’t feel ready. This just popped up on Facebook and I thought it was the right time.

“Cancer patients often go up Monday to Friday for treatment and rather than them all staying on a ward, Maggie’s provides lodge-style accommodation so that there’s a communal lounge but everyone has their own room.”

Friend Laura Scott has also joined in to support her pal in completing the task.

Mum-of-two Jenna said: “Laura asked if I would mind if she joined in with me, she said I had inspired her to get active and do it with me.”

But finding the time to complete the challenge hasn’t been any feat.

Jenna, of Georgetown, added: “My daughters Madison and Willow sometimes come along with me on their bikes and I sometimes manage to escape early to run a bit by myself.”

A donation page on social media helped hopeful Jenna smash her £500 target within hours and her efforts have now raised more than £1,100 for Maggie’s Run50 Facebook challenge.
