Kind-hearted Dublin students to raise money for the homeless through annual sleep out event

A group of kind-hearted Dublin students are set to do their annual sleep out event to raise money for the homeless but it's going to be a little different this year.

Pupils from Belvedere College hope to raise vital funds for Focus Ireland, Peter McVerry Trust, and Home Again for their Christmas event.

This year they will be sleeping out in their own gardens due to the pandemic instead of their usual sleepout under the GPO.

They will also be collecting donations online.

Spokesman Sean Brady said: "We usually sleep out under the GPO for the nights of December 22 and 23, and collect using buckets on the street up until the 24th.

"This year we will have to sleep out in our back gardens and all forms of collecting will be through online donations on our website and Just Giving pages."

The sixth year student added: "All the funds raised throughout the days of the sleepout go directly to our three charities, Focus Ireland, Peter McVerry Trust and Home Again, who are fighting against Homelessness in Ireland.

"We are asking people to please support us in any way they can."

Last year the big-hearted pupils raised a whopping €162,518.03.

Sean said: "Despite everything going on, we hope to top that with Sleepout2020.

"As our school is in the centre of town, we see that homelessness is an epidemic that is destroying people’s lives.

"The boys from our school who do a soup run all throughout the year continually remind us that behind each statistic is a person with a name.
"There are 2,642 homeless young people in Ireland, who not only have to deal with the normal stresses associated with growing up – state exams, school life, social life – but they have to do so without having a place to call home."
