Kind Edinburgh schoolboy, 12, raises money to fight poverty by going 'baldy'

A kind-hearted schoolboy from Edinburgh is looking to raise hundreds of pounds to fight poverty by shaving his head.

Lennon Blues has been volunteering at the Goodtreees Neighbourhood Centre in Moredunvale and is keen to do even more to help those less fortunate go on holiday.

If he reaches £300, "Lenzo" will have his head shaved - going "baldy". He has set up a crowdfunding page which has raised more than £200 so far.

Lennon was among a group of children who protested at the city council against proposed cuts to community projects in the south of Edinburgh.

The money will go towards helping young children from poorer backgrounds have a holiday in the Highlands.

Lennon said: "I am 12 & I am a youth volunteer at Goodtrees, and am raising money so that wee children who don't have much can go on a holiday.

"If I get too £300, I will get it done. My mum doesny know yet though and will only let me if its worth it. My dad said its fine though.

"All funds raised will be passed to the charity irrespective of whether my target is reached, not reached or exceeded."

Youth workers are delighted at Lennon's initiative, saying they are lucky to have him.

Youth service manager at the Goodtrees centre John Beatson said: "This is just the latest example of Lennon going above and beyond to support those who are less fortunate and raising funds so that children under 12 can enjoy a nurturing and dynamic week of holiday to Hopscotch Holiday Centre in the Highlands.

"This experience will help the children build real and lasting memories and a break away from their home life.

"Lennon has been volunteering as a junior youth worker with us since he was 9 years old, and in this time he has supported our programmes tackling holiday hunger, operation Christmas delivering thousands of gifts to disadvantaged families, raising funds for children affected by poverty.

"Lennon represent’s the very best of Goodtrees, giving up his own time to support our programmes and doing all he can to support those living in poverty. We’re lucky to have him."
