Kind Cambuslang dental nurse hands in nearly 200 gifts to Christmas toy appeal

A kind Cambuslang dental nurse has ensured underprivileged youngsters will have something to smile about this Christmas – after handing in nearly 200 gifts to a toy appeal.

Emily Lynch, who works at Cambuslang Dental Care, has collected presents for the Glasgow Spirit of Christmas appeal for the past three years.

This year, she and pal Zoe Jamieson picked up a whopping 194 donations, despite having to cope with the added challenges brought on by the coronavirus pandemic.

A delighted Emily has now handed the gifts over, and hopes they will bring some Christmas cheer come December 25.

She explained: “Given the circumstances we weren’t sure how it would go but we were both blown away with everyone’s support and generosity, especially this year as it has been a difficult time for most.

“It really is a nice feeling to know they will make many kids happy at Christmas, although it is sad to see halls filled with presents and to see the demand for gifts for children on our doorstep who don’t have the luxury of things we take for granted.

“It is an amazing cause to be a part of and we really just act as the middle men to get the gifts to where they need to be.

“It’s so special encouraging others to be a part of it too.”

Emily and Zoe encouraged their friends and family to get involved, while also appealing for gifts on social media groups.

They also had to change their usual routine because of Covid-19.

Emily said: “It did make it more difficult for gifts to be dropped off.

“My work would usually act as a central drop-off point for patients, friends and the local community but due to our restrictions we couldn’t do this.

“However, between me and Zoe we met with friends, family and locals to collect their gifts from them, so people could still participate.

“It really was no bother to us as the most important part was that people were still able take part.

“I would like to say a special thank you to all the people who took part this year. I really cannot thank them enough because without them it wouldn’t be possible.”

Win SIX festive cocktails to your door

The Spirit of Christmas appeal aims to give local children affected by hardship or living in poverty a Christmas gift to enjoy.

Last year, the initiative helped provide presents for 13,460 kids in Glasgow and surrounding areas, including Rutherglen and Cambuslang.

Meanwhile Emily now has to start her present buying again – this time for friends and family.

She added: “Unfortunately I don’t get to put my feet up now.

“It’s a lot of organisation but I love it and wouldn’t have it any other way – now I get to start my own Christmas shopping and get organised all over again!”
