Kind Ayrshire cafe owner serves up free ice cream and cakes for injured schoolboy

A kind-hearted cafe owner sent free ice cream and cakes to an Irvine schoolboy who broke his collar bone.

Michelle Harkin, who runs Shells Scoops and Shakes in Irvine’s High Street, served up the tasty home remedy after reading about nine-year-old Kalub Dunsmuir plight on Facebook.

She spotted a post by his mum Kimberley, a regular customer at the shop, which showed the injured youngster in a sling.

Michelle then arranged for a goodie box – packed with eight scoops, a double cone and cakes – to be delivered to his home.

Mum Kimberely, 28, revealed: “Michelle sent me a lovely message saying she wanted to cheer Kalub up.

“He couldn’t believe his eyes when this big goodie box turned up at the house.

“It really cheered him up because he’s been struggling to sleep at night with the pain. He’s got one bit of cake left, so he’s definitely enjoyed it. We can’t thank Michelle enough, it was just a lovely thing to do.”

Michelle, who opened the cafe six years ago, said: “Kalub has been coming into the shop with his mum since he was a toddler so I know he loves his ice cream.

“Putting together a wee treat was the very least I could do to cheer the wee soul up. The kind of shop we are, we obviously get a lot of kids in and you get to know them really well.

“It’s nice to be nice if you can, particularly just now with everything that’s going on.

“I hope Kalub enjoyed it and I can’t wait to see him and his mum back in the shop when he’s better.”

Kalub, who attends Castlepark Primary, hopes to be back at school next week.
