Kind £1m Lotto winner's gift to NHS heroes as he vows 'I want to give back'

Lottery winner Jamie Heavens is helping out NHS workers during the pandemic by offering them free motor breakdown recovery.

Kind Jamie, 26, who bought the breakdown recovery firm with his winnings, said: “I just wanted to give my little bit back.

“And I hoped other people might see my offer and do the same thing.

“I know the NHS staff are doing a fantastic job and I wanted to do something to show how much they are appreciated. It’s a challenging time for so many people at the moment, we all have to pull together and help if we can.”

Jamie helped nurse Lorraine Knott, 46, who cares for Covid-19 patients at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital, fixing her flat tyre at the end of her 12-hour shift.

He said: “As soon as I saw Lorraine’s NHS lanyard I told her that the job was for free and her face just lit up.”

Jamie was 22 when he won the National Lottery in September 2016.

He credits his son Hughie, who was three months old at that time, with ensuring he used his winnings wisely.

Jamie, who lives with wife Danielle, 25, and Hughie in a bungalow in Bournemouth, said: “The win 100% changed my life. If it hadn’t been for Hughie I could have gone down a different path but I had my family to think about."

Jamie won £1,000,000 on a Millionaire Riches Scratchcard.

He previously said: “I was working as a roofer for the family firm when my uncle sent me to refuel the truck.

"The first petrol station didn’t do fuel cards, so I drove to another, and then the man in front of me bought a scratch card, so I picked the same card as him.

"I drove to a layby to scratch it, and realised I’d won. But it was 7.30 in the morning, and I still had a day’s shift ahead.

"I couldn’t get signal, so I climbed onto the roof we were working on, and rang Camelot. I won a million pounds and earned another £100 for my shift.

"My son Hughie was nine weeks old, and although I’d already proposed to Danielle, and the win gave us the day of our dreams.

"The wedding cost £25,000 but we had a band, a videographer and a massive marquee. I bought a business and I still work, but now I’m my own boss.”
