SAITAMA -- A "kimono summit" will be held in Saitama city on Oct. 13, bringing together groups in the Kanto region that work to vitalize local communities through their traditional fabrics.
The event will be held at the Saitama Prefectural Museum of History and Folklore from 2:30 p.m. It will be organized by the Saitama prefectural government and planned by Kawagoe Kimono Sanpo, a nonprofit organization dedicated to passing on the culture of kimono and promoting exchanges among lovers of the traditional garment.
At the event, the NPO will introduce its efforts to make kimono using silk produced in Saitama Prefecture. Also featured will be presentations on services to rent kimono and dress visitors in Chichibu, Saitama Prefecture, and Ashikaga, Tochigi Prefecture, both of which are production areas for meisen silk fabric.
There will also be reports on a project that revived a fabric production technique discontinued about 50 years ago in Isesaki, Gunma Prefecture.
Sheila Cliffe, a professor at Jumonji University who organizes kimono exhibitions in Japan and abroad, will give a lecture at the event. Cliffe will be joined by Kazue Kimura, a meisen collector, for a talk session.
Admission is free. Ahead of the summit, a kimono show will be held at 1 p.m. on a stage in Omiya Park, where the museum is located.
