Well, I guess it really is 2016 again, because Taylor Swift and Kim Kardashian’s decade-long feud has resurfaced. While the acquaintances-turned-enemies have had little to do with each other since Kim’s split from Kanye West in 2021, the SKIMS founder made a rare comment about the pop superstar on her sister Khloé Kardashian’s podcast this week.
“Do you think people would be surprised that you listen to Taylor Swift?” Khloé asked Kim on Khloe in Wonder Land.
“I think I’ve said it,” Kim replied, to which Khloé doubled down and said people would be “surprised” to learn it.
“Yeah, I mean, it’s just I have like, some of her older songs in my playlist,” Kim continued. “I’ve always thought she’s like, a super talented great artist.”
She added that she “loves country music” — especially Shania Twain, Carrie Underwood and LeAnn Rimes — so let’s hope Taylor releases the “Taylor’s Version” of her debut album stat for Kim’s sake.
Kim Kardashian and Taylor Swift’s beef, explained
Kim and Taylor’s relationship seemingly began in 2015 when the singer resolved her long-running beef with Kim’s then-husband Kanye and presented him with the Video Vanguard Award at the VMAs.
However, the reunion was short-lived when Kanye released the song “Famous” the following year, which name-checked Taylor and called her a bitch. Kim and Kanye claimed that Taylor approved the lyrics, but she denied it — and trust me, it was hard being a Swiftie at the time.
Kanye went on to release a music video for “Famous” featuring lookalike sex dolls, and Kim leaked part of a phone call between Taylor and Kanye discussing the song on Snapchat in 2016. The unedited phone call eventually leaked online in 2020, which proved that Kim’s footage had been doctored and Taylor was right all along.
It’s widely believed that the feud between the trio sparked Taylor’s iconic Reputation era, with songs like “Look What You Made Me Do” and “This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things” referencing Kimye.
Taylor’s 2024 song “thanK you aIMee” from The Tortured Poets Department is also believed to be about Kim, as her name is capitalised in the title. The lyrics reveal that Taylor still holds anger towards “Aimee”, but she’s grateful for how she helped her career in the long run.
Look, if Taylor can squash her beef with Demi Lovato, Nicki Minaj and even Katy Perry, then I have hope she and Kim can patch things up one day. If not for them, then for North West so that she can dance along to Taylor’s songs in peace.
