Kim Kardashian and Kris Jenner are suing Ray J for defamation, accusing him of “recklessly” claiming they were the subject of a federal investigation.
Kardashian and Jenner’s lawyer, Alex Spiro, confirmed the legal move in a statement to PEOPLE, saying Ray J’s statements about the pair, which he made earlier this year, are “blatantly false” and “constitute reckless disregard for the truth”.
“Kris Jenner and Kim Kardashian have never brought a defamation claim before nor have they been distracted by noise, but this false and serious allegation left no choice,” Spiro said.
The lawsuit points to two instances in which Ray J — who infamously dated Kardashian in the early 2000s — allegedly defamed the members of the famous family.

The first involves comments Ray J made during the documentary United States vs. Sean Combs, which premiered in May and traced the trial and charges against Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs.
In the doc, Ray J said that “racketeering charges against the Kardashians would be appropriate”, and that he would “believe it” if he was “told the Kardashians [were] being charged for racketeering”.
According to the lawsuit, Ray J then allegedly doubled-down on the claim during an Instagram livestream in September.
Ray J allegedly told followers that Kardashian and Jenner were under federal investigation on charges relating to the RICO act, which targets racketeering, organised crime and white collar crime in the US.
“The federal RICO I’m about to drop on Kris and Kim is about to be crazy … the feds [are] coming,” Ray J allegedly said on the livestream.
He also allegedly compared the supposed investigation to that of Combs’, saying it would be “worse than Diddy”.
Spiro slammed Ray J’s accusations as the “most malicious defamatory conduct”.
“No such federal investigation exists; no law enforcement agency has initiated any criminal proceedings or investigations related to racketeering charges against Ms. Kardashian or Ms. Jenner; and no credible evidence whatsoever supports these inflammatory allegations,” he said.
Elsewhere in the suit, Spiro claimed Ray J’s comments were part of a broader campaign of “harassment” against the Kardashians.
“[Ray J] has engaged in a sustained campaign of harassment and defamation for more than two decades,” Spiro said.
“Unable to accept the end of his fleeting relationship with Ms. Kardashian over twenty years ago, Ray J has repeatedly sought to attach himself to Plaintiffs’ names and exploit their prominence for personal gain.”

Kardashian and Jenner are seeking unspecified compensatory and punitive damages due to the harm to their personal and professional reputations as a result of Ray J’s claims.
Kardashian and Ray J dated from 2003 to 2007, with their now infamous sex tape leaked to the public months before the 2007 premiere of Keeping Up With The Kardashians.
