The protests started last Friday with peaceful demonstrations but later turned violent. Protesters damaged property, including burning Waymo self-driving cars. The growing unrest led to a major response from the federal government and backlash from the California governor. President Trump sent thousands of National Guard troops and 700 Marines to help local police handle the chaos. Sending this many military personnel shows how serious the situation had become and how worried officials were about the increasing violence.

The intensity of the protests led Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass to set a curfew in downtown Los Angeles, starting at 8 PM on Tuesday and lasting until 6 AM on Wednesday, to try to bring back order and safety. The curfew was meant to prevent more violence and give authorities a better chance to control the situation.
