Kim Kallstrom lifts lid on the 'embarrassing' back injury that ruined his strange Arsenal spell

Kim Kallstrom has detailed just how he sustained his back injury before joining Arsenal in January 2014.

Arriving at the club with the injury, the Swede was limited to just four Gunners appearances but played a crucial role in booking their place in the 2014 FA Cup final, scoring a penalty in the semi-final vs Wigan Athletic.

Kallstrom's time in north London has become renowned for the fact that he was signed while injured.

On a traning camp in Abu Dhabi with Spartak Moscow when he first learnt of Arsenal's interest in him, he outlined just what led to his infamous back injury.

Arsenal behind the scenes on the impact on transfers this summer and the next great creative midfielder

"Lots of people think they know about this injury but let me explain it properly," he told Arsenal's official website.

"We were training on the beach - this is so embarrassing - and it was a proper training session too, not just one for fun. I say it was a beach, it was more like concrete. Anyway, we had a game there and I fell badly on a small rock.

"I hit my back and had some pain. Obviously we were due to go back to Moscow the day after so we didn't do any medical check-up there because it wasn't too bad at the time. We informed Arsenal straight away that I had a problem with my back and that I had no idea what it was, so they just told me to come along anyway."

Signed on transfer deadline day, there wasn't much time for the Gunners to get the deal over the line. Either Kallstrom was their man, or they were to go without an extra body whilst the squad was hit with injuries.

Of course, the deal was done, but the pace at which it was completed surprised Kallstrom and even though he only stepped onto the pitch for times in the famous red and white, his penalty against Wigan will keep him in Arsenal folklore forever.

"It was a bit of a blur because the deal had to be done quickly. I came to London, we had the medical and we found out there were some problems but we arranged the deal anyway," he added.

"I thought the transfer would've been off because I was injured but we worked out a deal between the clubs that said I could stay.

It was really the last few minutes of the transfer window so either they signed me with a bad back, or they didn't sign anyone because there wasn't any time left. That's why they took a chance on me and in the end it worked out quite well."
